I graduated from UNC-CH in 1980 with a B.S. in Zoology and from NCSU-CVM in 1987 with my DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) where I met my wife Corina in April 1987 who was a licensed Veterinary Technician at the school and we were married 6 months later in Oct. 1987.  I worked in Durham, NC a few years  before being laid off when the practice I was in was sold. We had just bought our first house that year and had 2 children under 3 and one on the way. My in-laws had sold their house and were living with us.

While searching for another job I was put in touch with Dr. Mead, owner of Asheboro Animal Hospital at the time, as a potential employer who was actually wanting to sell the practice. With the help of God, we worked out a deal and I became the new owner of Asheboro Animal Hospital, June 1, 1991. Besides myself, had one part time veterinarian – Dr. Yow, a groomer and about 4 other staff members, including Patty Mulkey my current lead receptionist, in an old restaurant converted to a veterinary hospital with 2 exam rooms. From the start, I knew that Jesus Christ had given me this practice and I wanted to honor Him with it so I adopted the motto: “Dedicated to Jesus Christ!” “Doing Our Best for You and Your Pets!” with the verse Colossians 3:23 in mind “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord”.

God has blessed this Animal Hospital and has allowed us to grow into a new building in May 2002 that I designed myself which includes 6 exam rooms, a double surgical suite, indoor dog runs and cat condos for boarding pets. We have grown to a staff of 5 veterinarians and 3 licensed Veterinary Technicians as well as many other staff members. We all do our best to work as one team to bring our clients the best care for their pets that we can as well as help out injured or sick stray pets as needed.

My one and only wife, Corina and I now have 13 children, 6 boys, 7 girls ages 10 to 30 and 4 grandchildren, 2 in Oklahoma 1100 miles west, and 2 in Canada 1100 miles north, that we like to travel to visit as often as we can. We also (currently) have 3 dogs and 2 cats all with very different personalities. My wife gave up her Veterinary Technician career that she loved to raise and homeschool all of our children. Our first love is Jesus Christ, who gave His life for us, and we love to go on mission trips and help other people and tell others about Jesus’s love for them. Anyone is more than welcome to ask me about my love for Christ anytime! May God Bless You All!  John M. Canipe, DVM – owner Asheboro Animal Hospital
